is a human rights and responsibility campaign shared by all churches and Christian communities. Week of responsobility is celebrated yearly in October.

Ecumenical Week of Responsibility 2026 – See the Human Being

Ecumenical Week of Responsibility 2026 will be held on 18–25 October under the theme See the Human Being. Ecumenical Responsibility Week is a joint campaign by the churches in Finland, inviting people to pause before human dignity and to strengthen encounter in a time of growing division and polarization – and to act for a more just and humane society.

“When divisions grow stronger in the world, it becomes ever more important to cherish our ability to listen, to understand and to be present to one another.”
– President Alexander Stubb, Day of Prayer Proclamation 2026

In a world where divisions are deepening and people are drifting further apart, the churches want to walk together with a clear calling: to see every human being as valuable. The theme See the Human Being invites churches, congregations and partners to turn their attention especially to those who easily remain unseen, lonely or unheard – while also building connection between people who are different.

Seeing the human being means recognizing the value of every individual – regardless of religion, background or opinions. It challenges us to see the person behind the views and to listen even when we disagree. This is where the mission of the churches is especially timely: to strengthen social cohesion, ease tensions and create space for respectful encounter.

Ecumenical work brings together different churches and Christian actors to build trust and unity. Together we can practice a way of life where we meet, listen, care and respect – without labeling or categorizing one another. In this way, the churches can act as a counterforce to polarization and bear witness to the truth that we belong to one another.

The theme arises from the Christian faith and the ecumenical tradition of prayer. The theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 2026, “One body, one Spirit, one hope” (Eph. 4:4), reminds us that every person has a place in the body of Christ – no one is secondary. This calling also includes those whose voices are rarely heard in society.

Jesus’ own example guides us. He saw those who were left aside, listened to the silenced and stopped for those who were rejected. His teaching calls us to a love that crosses boundaries:
“Do to others as you would have them do to you.” (Luke 6:31)

Ecumenical Responsibility Week offers congregations and communities ready-made materials, ideas and support to put the theme See the Human Being into practice. The materials strengthen safe and respectful encounters and help build more equal and open communities in a time of increasing division and polarization. They include both spiritual resources – devotions, biblical texts and prayers – and practical tools for everyday life.

The campaign invites people to understand polarization and to seek ways to reduce it. It encourages encountering others even in the midst of disagreement and building bridges between different people and groups. At the same time, it challenges us to reflect: is everyone truly seen and heard – also those whose voices often go unnoticed?

Congregations are offered concrete ideas and ready-made models for implementing Responsibility Week: events, discussions, encounters and everyday actions that strengthen participation and connection. Through communication and shared content, the campaign is visible across various channels, and common events create space for dialogue, learning and connection across boundaries.

See the Human Being is not just a campaign theme. It is a way of living in the church and in the world. It is a call to encounter the other – not as a threat or an opponent, but as a neighbor.
